have a lot ( enough, too much) on one’s plate：

やるべきことが山ほど（十分に、ありすぎるほど）ある

 

 

 

「やるべきことがたくさんある」

 

↑を英語にするとしたら　どうします？

 

 

 

私なら　迷うことなく

 

 

I’ve got a lot to do.　　と表現しますね。

 

 

ふむ・・・これでもいいんですけど

 

 

普通過ぎる・・・（＾＾；）

 

 

ということで

 

こちらで出会った　言えたら「ふふっ♪」って気になる表現を

 

ご紹介します！

 

それが　今回のネイティブ表現である

 

have a lot on one’s plate 　です！

 

 

例文）

You shouldn’t take on the new project if you already have a lot

on your plate.

 

（抱えてる仕事がたくさんあるんだったら

新しいプロジェクトは引き受けるべきじゃないわ！）

 

＊take on～：～（仕事など）を引き受ける

 

 

have a lot on one’s plate で

 

『やるべきこと（仕事など）がたくさんある』

 

という意味になります。

 

なんかちょっとカッコいい表現ですね！

 

この表現はテレビドラマで結構耳にします（＾＾）

 

 

 

英英辞書でこの意味を調べたところ

 

to have a lot of problems to deal with or

a lot of things to worry about. 　だそう。

 

単に「するべきこと」だけじゃなくて

「心配ごと、問題」などにも使えるんですね！

 

 

 

例文ダイアローグ）

 

A: Why didn’t you talk to me about your problem before?

B: Well, because you have a lot on your plate yourself, so

   I didn’t want to bother you with my problem.

 

A：なんで困ってること話してくれなかったの？

B：う～ん、だってあなただって色々問題抱えてるし、

     私のことで迷惑かけたくなかったの。

キラリな英語表現　その21

stuff up　：へまをやらかす、しくじる、間違える

例文）

I totally stuffed up at the job interview yesterday.

I couldn’t say a word because I was so nervous.

(昨日の面接、大失敗してしまったよ・・

緊張で一言もしゃべれなかったんだ。）

I’ll let it pass this time but don’t stuff up again!

（今回は大目に見てやる、でももう失敗すんなよ！）

stuff up を別の表現で表すと

make a mistake　です。

stuffの原義は『物質』だそう。

動詞で『～を詰める、詰め込む』という意味があります。

stuff up ・・どういうイメージでしょうね？

何かやらかしてあっぷあっぷしてる・・

そんな感じが私にはします。

パートナーにイメージについて　尋ねたんですが

わからない・・・（＾＾；）という答え。。

ありゃりゃ・・

ま、そんなときもありますよね。

このstuff up, オージードラマなどでかなり耳にします。

オーストラリア独自の表現のようです。

いろんな辞書でstuff upを調べたんですが

載っていませんでした（＾＾；）

ふむ、マイナーなのか・・・

こんなに使われてるのになぁ・・（残念）

気を取り直して・・っと

『へまをする、しくじる』

同じような意味で

mess up や

screw up などがありますね！

パートナー曰く

screw up は強めの表現だそう。

make a BIG mistake そんなところでしょうか？

『大失敗する、めちゃくちゃにする』　ですね！

例文）

I screwed up my entrance exam, now I can’t go to university.

（入試で失敗して、大学へ行けなくなっちゃたよ！）

ちなみに　screw up はアメリカ英語なので

オースではあんまり使わないそうです。

キラリな英語表現　その20

gutsy : ガッツ（勇気）のある、威勢のいい、図太い

例文）She is such a gutsy woman!

 She’s always been tough and strong no matter what!

(彼女ってホントガッツあるよね！何があっても動じないもの！)

I am gutted.　覚えてらっしゃいますか？

以前ご紹介したね！（おさらいはこちらから）

これは『めっちゃ悲しい、ひどく凹んだ』という意味でした！

そのときにもちょっと触れましたが

gutには『根性、勇気』という意味があります。

今日ご紹介するgutsy はその形容詞形になります。

gutsy で『ガッツのある、威勢のいい』という意味です。

こちらオーストラリアには

ホントgutsy womenが多いですっ！

女性、強いです☆

私は九州出身なので

どちらかというとgutsyな方だと思いますが

オースの女性には負けそうです（＾＾；）

例）

・The gutsy woman fought off a man who tried to mug her.

(その勇敢な女性は襲いかかってきた男を撃退した)

＊     fight off~：～を撃退する

＊     mug~：～から金品を奪おうとする

・He is such a gutsy tennis player!

He gives it his all even when he is exhausted.

 （彼ったらホントガッツのあるテニスプレイヤーだよね！

くたくたになっても全力でプレーしてるもん！）

 いきなりですが

では　ここで問題です！

　

『根性なし, 腑抜けの』　は

英語で何というでしょう？

チクタク♪チクタク♪

Time is up! 　そこまでです！

coward と答えた方、　素晴らしい☆

これで大正解！

ですが　今日はgutを勉強したので

ついでにgut の入った単語での『根性なし、腑抜け』も

覚えちゃいましょう！

簡単ですよ（＾＾）

根性なし　→　根性がない　→　gutless　です！

パートナー曰く、

gutlessは結構きつめの意味なるそうです。

どちらかというとcowardのほうが一般的らしいですよ！

ちなみに　a gutless wonder で『全くの意気地なし』だそう。

これはカジュアルな表現だそうです。

例文）The gutless thief told the police that his friend did it.

（その根性なしのコソ泥は友達がやったんだ！と警察に話した）

キラリな英語表現　その19

 

a handful ：　手に負えない人【事　仕事】、問題児

 

例文）

My three-year-old boy is a handful now.

(うちの三歳の息子は今手に負えなくてさ～)

 

handful とは『ひと握り』という意味ですね！

 

a handful　で　

 

手に負えない人（事、仕事）を意味します。

 

これはイメージ湧きやすい！

日本語の『手がかかる』という表現と似てますね。

 

 

例文）

I bet you can’t believe this but I was a real handful when I was a teenager.

My mum often got calls from the police, you know.

 

(信じられないだろうけど,ガキの頃かなりの問題児だったよ。

母さん何度も警察に呼ばれちゃってさ）

 

ちなみに

 

handを使った

 

get out of hand　という表現もあります。

 

これは

 

『(事)が手に負えなくなる、収拾が付かなくなる』

 

という意味。

 

これも日本語と同じ感覚ですね！

例文）

We have to do something before things get out of hand!

(事が手に負えなくなる前に何とかしなきゃ！)

日英日記：結婚式に出席してきました！

Hi, everyone! How's it going? 

みなさん、こんにちわ！お元気ですか？

My partner and I drove down to Noosa to attend his mate's wedding ceremony and reception on Sunday. I had never been to Aussie weddings before so I was  looking forward to it. I've known the bride and groom for some while. They are nice couple. They have been together  for more than 8 years and finally the groom made his decision to tie the knot! It must have been hard for the bride to wait such a long time and now I bet she is elated! I am very happy for them!

今週の日曜日にパートナーと彼の友達の結婚式＆披露宴に出席するためにヌーサへと出かけました。オーストラリアの結婚式にはそれまで行ったことがなかったので楽しみにしてたんです♪花嫁さんと花婿さんのことはこっちに来る以前から知ってて2人はいい感じのカップルです（＾＾）2人はもう8年ぐらい付き合っててようやく花婿さん、身を固める決心がついたみたい（笑）花嫁さんにとってみたら8年は長いですよね～、よく辛抱して待ってたな～。きっと今はかなりhappyでしょうね！とっても幸せそうな2人に私も幸せをわけてもらいました☆

The wedding ceremony was held at a park near the beach in Noosa. It was really windy and a bit chilly. Thank goodness that I had brought my cardigan with me! It came in handy.Well, the ceremony was carried out casually and smoothly. Actually I was kind of preoccupied with taking pictures of the scene of the ceremony so it was pretty hard for me to concentrate on the ceremony, which is not good, is it? 

挙式はヌーサの海岸沿いにある公園で行なわれました。とっても風が強くて肌寒かったです。念のためにカーディガンを持って行っててよかった（＾＾）役に立ってくれました。　挙式はとってもカジュアルでスムーズに進行しました。ふふ、実は私ったら写真を撮ることばっかに夢中になってて肝心のセレモニーには集中できず・・、これじゃいけませんねぇ～（＾＾；）

The reception was held at a waterfront restaurant in Noosa. The reception was pretty casual too. We enjoyed eating, drinking ( I only drank apple juice though ^^;) and dancing!  My partner took my hand to the dance floor and we danced together! I had never danced before so it was kind of 

embarassing in the begining but I got used to it and got to like it! 

披露宴はヌーサの海沿いのレストランで行なわれました。これまたカジュアルな感じの披露宴でしたよ！料理を食べて、飲んで（ちなみに私はリンゴジュースばっか飲んでましたけど＾＾；）そして踊って☆パートナーに手を取られダンスフロアーへと引っ張られちゃいました！ダンスなんか踊ったことなかったんで最初はこっぱずかしかったんですがだんだん慣れて楽しめました！

In Japan, we have yokyo time during wedding reception, don't we? After I've experienced the Aussie reception, I feel that we don't need yokyo time at all, I even feel that it's a kind of waste of time! Because you know during yokyo time, people sing karaoke or do some crazy stuff, right?  Sometimes it feels like it will last forever!  Anyway, it's not so fun just sitting on a chair and listening  to ( boring) songs! It's much better to have fun, dancing altogether!  Well, this is what I think. Maybe we need  yokyo time because bride & groom need that time since they want to chage their dresses. What do you think?

日本じゃ披露宴には余興がつき物ですよね！今回オース式の結婚式を体験して、あの余興時間って必要ないんじゃないかしらって思っちゃいました！時間の無駄・・とさえ・・（＾＾；）だって余興の時間ってカラオケとかなんか変な催し物があったりと・・ときどきこれがずっと続くんじゃないの？ってそんな気すらするときもあります。とにかくイスに座ってただダラダラと歌を聴く・・そんなのつまらないですよね！それよりもみんなでダンス☆のほうが楽しいとおもうんだけど・・・ま、これは私の意見ですから・・たぶんお色直しとかあるからそれで余興の時間がいるのかもしれませんね。みなさんはどう思います？

Well, the ceremony and reception went very well but there was one problem that kept bothering me, which was my poor feet! I was wearing high heels, which I hadn't worn  for a long time.  They started to give me a mild pain 30 minutes after I wore them, and an hour later they were killing me!!  I had trouble walking even to the car park! It's was just 5 minutes walk! Well, after all, I managed to survive,  so it turned out to be alright.

結婚式と披露宴はすごくいい感じに進んだんですが一つ気になる問題が･･それは私のかわいそうな足。ヒールを履いてたんですが、長いこと履いてなかったので履い30分後には足が痛み出し、で1時間後には立ってるのもしんどいぐらいに（＾＾；）たった5分歩くことすら大変でした・・でもまぁ何とかやり過ごせたんで良かったんですけどね（＾＾）

Anyway I had a really good day that day (other than that shoe problem), which is good!I wonder when I  will get married....

ふむ、足の件以外はホントにいい一日でした！よかったです（＾＾）

・・私の結婚はいつになることやら・・

英語日記：デファクトビサ取得準備に奮闘中！

Hi everyone, how's it going?

I haven't mentioned it before but I am working on taking a de facto visa right now. Actually, I've been working on it since this August. De facto visa is a kind of spouse visa but it is for couples who are living together but not technically married.  There are some conditions you have to fulfill if you want to obtain a de facto visa, which I think my partner and I have fulfilled.

 There are lots of forms that he and I have to fill in and we also have to lodge some evidence that shows that our relationship is genuine and continuing. In August, we drove down to Nambour which was about one hour drive from our place to see a doctor for check-up and X-ray. I also have to submit my police record back in Japan so I went to the police station to have them print my finger prints. I had never been to the police station before so I was a bit nervous at first but the police officer was nice and  everything went well without a hitch.

 I think we are about 80% finished with the preparation. The most hectic work was to write a report on the history of our relationship. It took me about a month to finish it up because our relationship is pretty long, which is about 4 years!  It's done now, so I am very happy! 

 Another 20% to go,  but I am feeling better now since we finally started to see the light at the end of the tunnel!  Wish us luck please!

私はワーホリビザでこっちにきてるんですが、

そのビザが切れるのが11月30日。

その前にデファクトビザの申請を終わらせないといけないんです。

8月ぐらいから少しずつ準備を始めてようやく終わりが見えてきました。

もうちょっとだ！頑張ろう☆
